* The Leadership Pocket Companions - An introduction

Ian writes - "For many years, I have been working with leaders to help them operate more effectively. This does not just relate to how well they complete tasks but also how they interact with others to ensure that overall effectiveness is raised.

I have been privileged to observe many different individuals and situations at first hand and to ponder and learn from what I see happening. I am aware that a lot of effort is put into developing peoples' knowledge and skills to enable them to deal with particular situations and events in a more efficient way. Whilst I'm sure that this is helpful, there is a tendency to assume that once this has been done, all will be well! My experience would challenge this assumption!

How we work with & develop others & ourselves
"It is never too late to become what you might have been" - George Eliot
Often in working with individuals, I find that they have the knowledge & skills but are still in a position where difficulties are occurring due to a reluctance to apply what they know. I've identified two factors that seem to be present that need attention. These are confidence and resilience.

Confidence can be to do with fear of both failure and success. People are unsure about how they will cope if the situation takes off or bombs! Can they handle what ensues?

Resilience is about being able to pick yourself up when you've been mentally squashed by things going 'pear-shaped'. It's the ability to feel confident within yourself that when you pick yourself up, shake yourself down and move on, that what has happened will not repeat itself, or if it does, you will be confident to respond differently.

In the pages of these books, I have tried to distil what I know about leadership, change and teamwork and share some of the models I use to enable others to develop confidence in having frameworks to think about and apply in the situations they face. The books are designed to support thinking leaders who want a straightforward way to access the knowledge and understanding available and apply it in the dilemmas they face. The intention is that the two books together will provide an accessible resource for busy leaders covering their major involvement areas.

I hope these books provide some of the support & encouragement needed to allow leaders to try new approaches and be open to the learning that ensues!". If you are interested in a version of one of the books designed for your own organisation please phone Ian to discuss.
